The Battle Begins

My trip to Whole Foods yesterday was semi productive. I found the So Delicious yogurt for $1.49 each which isn't too bad since I also checked Safeway's price which is ONE WHOLE DOLLAR MORE! I basically walked up and down the aisles, reading the labels of all the food prducts (HA HA - I used to give people strange looks when I saw them doing the same thing). Anyway, I found that A LOT of things have glutein or casein. Gluten is not just wheat, it's rye, barley, oats and various forms of starch. By the time I started reading all those labels, I forgot the words I was supposed to be looking for. I couldn't find a vitamin that I was sure of. Many of the gluten free crackers and chips have milk products in them - go figure! Evidently, the seasoning used in some of them is milk based. The learning process is really overwhelming. Last night I realized that Sarah's bath soap has oats in it - so that is a "no no" too!

I got home all anxious and ready to start the new diet. Well, Miss Sarah wouldn't eat ANY of it! The So Delicious yogurt is tasty but a little on the runny side compared to the Yoplait. The soy yogurt that Sean bought had the same consistency but no artificial coloring so I guess it looked a little strange to her. The taste was not too bad, but I guess it's just different. Kyle taste tested the milk and likes the vanilla soy milk, but not the rice milk. Sarah doesn't like either one. You should have seen her face after she took a sip. She pulled the cup away and looked at it like, "this is not my milk". We tried gluten free waffles which Sarah took one bite of. Kyle ended up finishing them off with no problem. I tried them again this morning and she did the same thing. I know she wanted to eat waffles because she started clapping when the waffle popped up out of the toaster, but once she tasted it, she was done.

This morning I got the bright idea to sneak the new food in slowly which is what I did when she switched from breast milk to regular milk. So I gave Sarah a half and half mixture of milk and a half and half mixture of the yogurt (mixing her old standards with the new stuff). She wasn't having it at all! Actually, she wouldn't eat ANYTHING. Every now and then she does that so maybe it was just a bad day.

I didn't think it would be easy, so I am not stressing too much over this. The real hard part for me is the shopping and learning all of the terminology. I ordered a kit that has laminated cards I can take into the market - can't wait for that to arrive.
